Even if I jumper an input terminal to the GND terminal, as shown in the picture, the PC still sees 4.5V on that pin. However, I can't get the input pins to "pull down" to zero volts. The breakout boards failed to cure the noise problem, but nonetheless the boards are still desirable because they simplify the wiring, so I'd like to continue using them. In the hope that it might make the system less fussy about PC's, I recently added breakout boards with opto-isolators.

I usually had to try 2 or 3 PCs to find one that made the steppers happy. It worked fine as long as the steppers liked the PC, but if they didn't like the PC then the motors would run rough and/or lose steps. For years I ran my CNC lathes by connecting the PC's parallel port wires directly to the Gecko stepper drives.
